Commuting on the Seine

April 6, 2005: Following a recent meeting of municipal and transport authorities, it seems likely that a regular water-bus line, to be called the Batoligne, will soon be developed. The bus will run up and down the Seine and connect Paris to suburban communities located on the river. A line called the Batobus already exists, but it runs only during daylight hours from the Eiffel Tower to the Jardin des Plantes, with six stops in between and a 15-to-30-minute wait between boats, depending on the time of year. A survey of 3,000 residents of the Ile de France showed that 90 percent were in favor of the idea. And, for once, politicians from the communities concerned were in agreement as well. The next step: feasibility and financing studies.
