NEW ART SPACES AND EXHIBITIONS

Lille Métropole Musée d’Art Moderne, d’Art Moderne et d’Art Brut

The Lille Métropole Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Brut, with the new extension on the right.

New art spaces: Just outside of Paris, in Saint-Ouen l’Aumône, an enormous space called The Storage (38 avenue du Fond de Vaux; tel.; 01 39 09 99 23) has been opened in a former warehouse by artist Philippe Pasqua with “Mea Culpa,” a show of his gigantic figurative paintings and a few sculptures.

Farther afield, in Villeneuve d’Ascq, a handsome new extension by architect Manuelle Gautrand has been added to the just-reopened Lille Métropole Musée d’Art Moderne, d’Art Moderne et d’Art Brut (LAM) to house the largest collection of Art Brut in France, which was recently donated to the museum.

Closer to home, a new exposition space for documentary photos, Le Bal (6, Impasse de la Défense, 75018 Paris) has opened in Paris near the Place de Clichy in a former Roaring Twenties “love hotel” and dance hall. The inaugural exhibition, “Anonymes,” features postwar photographs of anonymous Americans by Walker Evans and many others.

New exhibition: The Musée du Quai Branly has an unusual show called “Baba Bling” on the subject of cultural mixing, featuring the glitzy lifestyle of well-off residents of Singapore of Chinese origin, known as “Babas,” who retained many of the customs of their ancestors but also adopted Malaysian and Western styles, creating a new culture with its own colorful identity.
