Icons: Photos by I.C. Rapoport

Through July 9

La Belle Hortense 31, rue Vieille du Temple, 75004 Paris. Tel.: 01 48 04 71 60

Deeply connected to Paris, I.C. Rapoport began his career in photojournalism in the 1960s with Paris-Match Magazine, working out of their New York bureau. His many Match photos include pictures of John F. Kennedy, Fidel Castro, Marilyn Monroe, Samuel Beckett, Eva Gabor, Tina Onassis, the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan, among dozens of other icons of the time. His cover photo of Jackie Kennedy in the now classic JFK funeral issue (Numero Historique) was seen around the world. Rapoport was later published in LIFE Magazine, TIME, Sports Illustrated, the Saturday Evening Post, LOOK, National Geographic. His photos of Samuel Beckett have been featured at the Centre Pompidou here in Paris.

In 2007, Equator Books of Venice, Los Angeles, held a highly successful one-man showing of Rapoport’s LIFE photo-essays concerning NYs Times Square, "The Way It Was" (in 1965). Rapoport now lives in Pacific Palisades, California, and Manhattan, with his wife Mary, and is currently a film and television writer.

EXHIBITION
Through 13 July 08
HUGHIE O’DONOGHUE
Parables

Over the past two decades, Hughie O’Donoghue’s work has assumed epic proportions in terms of scale, treatment and subject matter. Primarily a painter, O’Donoghue is also a superb draughtsman and printmaker and his most recent paintings are an amalgam or hybrid of painting, photography and in some cases sculptural construction. Internationally renowned, he is currently one of Ireland’s most individual and ambitious practitioners. His persistent themes are memory, myth, identity, and history.

EXPOSITION DE PHOTOGRAPHIES
MEREDITH MULLINS

En Dehors du Temps ("Outside of Time")

At W Finance in the beautiful Square d'Orléans (a former home of George Sand), 80 rue Taitbout, 75009 (Metro: Trinité).

"This collection of images is about the energy, movement, and expansion of time that happens between the ticks of the clock—a freedom that goes beyond time," Meredith says of the exhibit. The exhibition runs through 30 September. Gallery hours are 10h-12h and 14h to 16h30, Monday through Friday. Meredith's award-winning book, In A Paris Moment, will also be available. Seat Yourself

Seat Yourself won the 2007 Oxford 10-Minute Play competition: A woman and a man attempt to dine in a restaurant, but the man’s
persistent absence from the table spoils the evening. His existence is questioned by an impossible Belgian waiter with a silly accent.

Paris Est theater will perform Seat Yourself at the Houla Oups bar on Wednesday, July 9 and at the Ogresse theater on Thursday, July 17.

At Houla Houps, we’ll try to start the play by 8:30 at the latest. It will be followed by a speed-concert by THE BZZ. After that, Paris Update music writer Perry Leopard will do a few songs or a DJ set of New Orleans hits and B-sides from the 60s. Depends on my, and your, mood...
Listen to THE BZZ at http://www.myspace.com/thebzzpage
or
http://www.last.fm/music/THE+BZZ

At the Ogresse, the doors open at 7 p.m. for drinking and socializing. We want to start the play by 8:30 at the latest. After, we’ll have a hootenanny, with Marten Ingle and Ana Bon-Bon. Listen to Ana and Marten at
http://www.myspace.com/marteninglemusic
http://www.myspace.com/anabonbon

Seat Yourself + THE BZZ + something from Perry...
July 9 at 8 p.m.
Houla Houps: 4 rue Basfroi, Paris 11. Métro : Ledru-Rollin, Voltaire
Free

Seat Yourself + Hootenanny (Marten Ingle, Ana Bon-Bon, Perry) July 17, doors open at 7 p.m.
Ogresse: 4 rue des Prairies, Paris 20. Métro : Pte de Bagnolet.

Rochefort en Accords Festival
21 to 23 August 2008
Rochefort sur Mer 17300 Poitou- Charente France

with
Gabriela Arnon
Rodolphe Burger
Clive Gregson
Chloe Mons
Renaud Gabriel Pion
Nibs Van Der Spuy
Martin Stephenson
Paul Tiernan
Yan Vagh
Jasmine Vegas
Gabriel Yacoub

&
The International House Band
featuring
BJ Cole - Geraint Watkins - John Lester
George Wolfheart - Jeff Boudreaux

French newspaper Le Monde described the accords festival as being unique in France, Europe and quite probably the world!
Where else could you hear Robyn Hitchcock soaring towards Astronomy Domine with Barry (the Fish) Melton and  BJ Cole helping to set the controls for the heart of the fun?
Or Peter Rowan performing with pedal-steel, Cristal de Baschet and cello – how about a version of Everybody’s Talkin’ by Panama Red with Geraint Watkins on piano and Fay Lovsky titillating a theremin and Ronnie Caryl ripping of a taut telecaster solo.
These are just some of the unusual combinations that occur during the Rochefort en Accords festival
where very little is planned and a great deal occurs.
See for yourself by going to youtube and do a seach under rochefort en accords you’ll find it to be a treasure trove of the unexpected.

+---[ JULY READINGS ]---+

As usual readings take place at 7pm Mondays (with the exception of two Wednesday readings) upstairs in the library (seats 30) or on the ground level (seats 50).

+--- Monday 7 & 14 July 7pm---+

In conjunction with New York University's Creative Writing Program in Paris there will be various writers from NYU's award-winning faculty. Readers include: George Foy, author of 11 novels and one nonfiction book; Matthew Rohrer, the author of, among other titles, A Green Light, for which he was shortlisted for the 2005 Griffin International Poetry Prize; Helen Schulman, author of Not a Free Show, and four novels, including A Day at the Beach and Matthew Zapruder, the founder of Verse Press and author of American Linden and The Pajamaist.

+--- Wednesday 9 July 7pm  ---+

Matt Thorne and Kevin Jackson will discuss new directions in British literature. Born in 1974, Matt Thorne, founder of the New Puritans group, published six novels before he turned 30. His novel Cherry was longlisted for the Booker Prize. Kevin Jackson has published various books including Invisible Forms: A Guide to Literary Curiosities, a biography of Humphrey Jennings, The Oxford Book of Money, a comic book about John Ruskin, a collection of interviews with film-maker Paul Schrader, and a study of the Moose (Alces alces).

+--- Wednesday 23 July 7pm  ---+

Lynne Knight will be reading from two of her poetry collections, The Book of Common Betrayals and Night in the Shape of a Mirror. She has won two book prizes, a Poetry Society of America Award and had a poem in Best American Poetry 2000. Her fourth collection, Again, is coming out next year through Sixteen Rivers Press. Lynne Knight will be joined by Nicole Courtet, who translated Lynne's book Snow Effects into French.

+--- Monday 28 July 7pm  ---+

Catherine Sanderson will be reading from Petite Anglaise, based on her blog of the same name. This is the story of her life in Paris with her partner, the workaholic Mr Frog, and their toddler. Writing with disarming honesty about Paris life, about the confines of her hollow relationship with Mr Frog and about the wonder and pain that comes with being a mother, she finds a new purpose to her day. 'Light, frank and tremendous fun. Like all good writers, Catherine's work enables us to appreciate the diversity, possibilities, trials and beauty of life'. – The Guardian
